When someone believes in a vision, a dream can become reality. An opportunity has presented itself for MTVarts to pursue our dream of a Performing Arts Center in Mount Vernon. With our own facility, Knox County could enjoy a constant schedule of events, workshops, special dramatic presentations, educational functions, and more.
Current opportunities: the old armory building on North Main Street and Uncle Dan's Playhouse/Ibiza 33.
Shremshock Architects conducted a feasibility study for the armory and prepared renderings of the conversion to a Performing Arts Center. The estimate for upgrades to the building making conversion to a fully accessible theatre approaches $2 million, an ambitious number.
Our second opportunity is much more attainable. Although the seating would be less than the 212 at the armory, the initial purchase price is far less and includes the accoutrements of a small theatre. Research is currently underway to determine the feasibility of this location.
Once location is decided, fundraising will begin. Our hopes are that private donations will pay for the building as well as establish an operating fund. Our programs are self-sustainable but ticket prices will only remain affordable if private donations can underwrite the ownership and operation of the performing arts center.
